May. 4th, 2007 10:08 pmHas anyone ever had a bad reaction to novocaine? I had to have three fillings yesterday, two on the left side of my mouth and one on the right side. Let me start off by saying that my dentist is really wonderful. He is the first dentist that I have ever gone to that managed to give me the shots without feeling even a pinch. He did the topical anesthetic, waited for it to work, and then gave me a set of shots. He told me that he wanted to let that start working and then he would give me more. He did come back and gave me another round of shots. It was after that round that I began to have increased respiration, heart palpitations, and nausea. I concentrated on calming my breathing, and that seemed to help, at least with the breathing and heart palpitations. The nausea has stuck around. So did the throbbing left over from the left side of my face. To put the fillings in the left side, they had to put in a spacer thingy between my teeth and that is what still hurts, where that was. I'm glad that I had it done because the cavities on the left side were very close to the nerve and they would have gotten seriously worse and painful if they would have been left alone. Apparently, the dentist had to put a nerve cap in there to make sure that it didn't hurt the nerve. The dentist explained this as he did it, like I would protest him doing whatever he did.
if you want a chuckle, I tell you about how I looked after my appointment. The left side of my face was swollen. However, the right side of my face was VERY numb, all the way above my eye brow. If the muscles around the eyes are numb, you have trouble blinking, so my eye watered for a while. Also, if one of your nostrils is numb, it can't contract enough to breathe very well, so my nose kept closing on that side. Of course my mouth was still numb, so I kept drooling. I looked like my right side of my face was melting as I was a teary, drooling mess, but my left side was blowing up. When I had to run to the store, I wondered why everyone looked at me like I was a freak. Did I mention that the dentist also put a topical anesthetic on my lips, which left a white residue? Yup, I was quite the pretty picture.
I am going to try to eat something now since the most recent wave of nausea has now passed. I hope that everyone else who has dental work has a better experience that I did. Off to the kitchen...
