Dec. 2nd, 2007 09:44 pmI am trying to get into the Christmas spirit. I really am. I am usually the first person feeling it because it's my favorite time of the year. I have been listening to the Christmas music, which helps. I have been doing quite a bit of shopping. I just have some problems feeling the sparkly happy love of the season. I think that it's because I am so tired and stressed from work. It doesn't help when my mother, and I love her dearly, is constantly asking me about the Christmas wish list that I gave to her. It seems a bit defeating if she calls me from the store and asks me which brand of grill pan I would rather have. When I was little, I would have loved to known all of my presents beforehand, but now, I'd like a few of them to be a surprise. Then I also had this conversation with her:
Mom: I've been trying to find the books that you listed, but I haven't been able to find any of them in any of the stores that I have been in
me: Have you gone to a book store?
Mom: No, would they have books there?
me: yes
mom: Would that Barnes and Noble place have books?
me: Yes. It's a book store, and so is Borders.
mom: Really? I thought that it was a wallpaper store.
me: no, it's a book store....
I swear that she is an intelligent person, but she is not a reader. She has been on a quest for some of the novels that I listed, and now loves going to bookstores because "did you know that book stores sell more than just books?" You have to love that she is naive in a way, but she tends to call me while in book stores and ask me about the books, again ruining my surprise.
She also informed me that she is going to give me money so I can buy my own birthday present. While I understand why she did that, it loses something in the process. I have mentioned several things that I would like to have, like a new digital camera or an iPod. Mom knows nothing about the electronics, so she thought that it would be better to give me money to get what I want instead of leaving it up to her. It's a wise choice because she knows less about electronics than she does books. I could only imagine what she would buy if she tried to do that on her own. However, some of the magic is lost when you buy it yourself.
Maybe I just need to put up some decorations to feel better.
