My brother went to dinner with several friends last night and one of them mentioned that she was going to see someone that they used to work with when they were in high school. This kid was always quiet and mousy when Derek knew him. He has now come out and dances in a drag show. My brother went to see the show, which was at a gay bar. He said that this guy made a beautiful girl. My brother enjoyed the show and even had one of the "girls" buy him a drink. How many straight guys do you know who would do that without freaking out? He wants me to go with him the next time that they have a drag show because he thinks that I would enjoy the show. He said that the only disturbing thing to him was seeing some of these guys, dressed as gorgeous women, come over and then hearing their very deep voices. The voices and looks didn't match. He said that it was a bit disorienting. I love that my brother is open enough to go to support an old friend who is now a drag queen at a gay bar. He said that some of the other guys that were at the dinner refused to go because it was at a gay bar. They didn't want to go because they were afraid that someone would hit on them. I've seen all of them, and in my opinion, they had nothing to worry about. Derek went, knowing that he had a good chance to be hit on because he has that sort of metrosexual look. He did get hit on and he still wants to go back the next time that the drag show happens. I do love my brother.
It was also the first time that he was at a bar since he stopped smoking, and he still didn't smoke. He has declared himself officially a non-smoker. I am ridiculously proud of him.
