Much with the teary-eyed feel-good
Aug. 5th, 2008 07:57 pmAs I have said so many times, I am a huge nerd. Thus, I have The Learning Channel marked as a favorite on my remote. As I was flipping through the channels this afternoon, my eye was caught by a show called "The Boy with a New Head". It was about a boy from Uganda who had a deformed skull, and he had to have surgery to save his life. The skull was putting pressure on his brain and on his optic nerves. I began watching the show because I couldn't get over how bizarre and pitiful this child looked. However, I am glad that I watched the show all the way through. He got the operation and looks normal now. I was just struck by how much hope he had throughout all three of his surgeries and how happy he was, no matter what. On the morning before one of his surgeries, he just needed to dance and sing. After all of the reconstructive surgery was complete and he went back home, he received a hero's welcome from people who had ostracized him before. The witch doctor had said that he was cursed, so none of the other kids wanted to talk to him or sit near him at school. His parents had taken him out of school because he would cry every day at school. Now, he is the leader at his school and he has forgiven the other kids for being cruel. He tells them about his trip to America and all of the amazing things that he saw. He wants to move back to the US and become a mechanic to fix things. The whole show was so heart-breaking and inspiring all at the same time. If you have TLC and have the chance, I recommend watching it, but make sure you have some kleenex on hand.
