change in plans
Sep. 1st, 2006 11:30 amWell, I won't be going to see my father now. We are getting the back side of tropical storm Ernesto, which has caused severe flooding. The cities have closed many roads, including the one that I would have to take to get on the interstate to my father's house. The winds were bad earlier and knocked out the electricity for a while. Actually the electricity has gone off and on several times today. They always get it back very quickly. Fortunately, my neighborhood is right beside a military base on one side and a high-end living area on the other side. That assures quick service return.
The unfortunate thing about losing electricity this morning is that I didn't hear that all of the schools and offices were closed today. I finished getting ready in the dark, got in my car and drove to work. What should have been a 25 minute drive took 45 minutes. THere was a lot of ponding on the roads, which isn't surprising since a lot of the roads are actually below sea level. Add tidal flooding and 8 inches of rain and you have a spectacular mess in the roads. I saw several cars that had driven through water and stalled out, but I was able to avoid that. I get to work and see that the power is out for that neighborhood. Even if the school system hadn't shut down, I wouldn't be able to work today. I turned around and came back home once I heard that the schools were all closed. It took an hour and a half to get home. The water had gotten worse and I had to turn around in a couple of places to find alternative ways to get home. There were a couple of dicey places where I was afraid that my car might stall out, but I made it home okay.
I'm glad to have the day off because I have slept most of the morning and feel so much better. However, there was still work that needed to happen before the first day of school. I think that I will call my principal and see if he will allow me to go to the building tomorrow, assuming that the electricity is back on, to finish the work. I can have the stuff done in a couple of hours. I could even run schedules if he needed me to instead of getting a data processor to do it. I just know that I won't get any real rest until I know that at least MY part is ready for Tuesday's opening. I can't really do anything about it now, so I think that I will take another nap. I'm starting to get a sinus headache, probably from all of the changes in barometric pressure.
