Jan. 4th, 2007 11:16 pmWell, I survived today, but I really wanted to choke a few people. The good thing is that the students did really well in the wake of the student's death yesterday. They created a banner for her, where other students could write a note and say goodbye to Kristen. Afterward, they put it in one of the display cases along with a picture collage of her. The crisis team was in the building until about 11:00. By then, most of the students were able to get back to regular classes and functioning without crying. They began to honor her instead of mourn her. It never ceases to amaze me how caring and wonderfully noble the students can be in the face of tragedy. I am very proud of them.
For the down side, we started testing today, and half of my department was not there. That left me with 4 people to test, two of whom had appointments outside of the building and left at 10:00. Testing was an all day affair, and we had to scramble to get all of the rooms covered. I understand having doctor's appointments, but they should know better than to schedule appointments on testing days! Last year, I came in for testing when my mother was in the hospital having a stress test done after being rushed to the hospital with chest pains. (It was a panic attack, thank goodness.) I honestly don't expect that same level of dedication from everyone else. However, when it comes to something controllable like making an appointment, I expect them to have some common sense!!! I was so frustrated. Today was also the day that all kinds of parents came to register their students at our school. Seven people tried to register today. Now, let me tell you a little something about the kind of family that moves or switches schools at this point in time of the year. In 95% of the cases, they are moving because their child has gotten into trouble at a previous school and they think that getting their children away from the bad influence is a good idea. In my experience, this rarely works because more often than not, the child in question IS the bad influence, so there's no getting away from it. In dealing with the new registrations from today, all but one was this kind of a situation. The one that wasn't like that involved a family where the parents just divorced and the mother had to go live with her sister until she finds a job and a place of her own. The other ones involved things like a student who had been suspended from the previous school and was not being allowed back into the building because he has criminal charges against him and is a safety issue. The mother was not forthcoming about this either. She thought that she could just sneak him into a new school without them finding out about his charges. Needless to say, he was not allowed to register and come to our building. He may eventually be allowed to register and be placed into an alternative school, but he won't step foot inside our building. Anyway, all of this is going on while all of the counselors, including myself, are involved with testing. My poor secretary had to deal with it all as best she could. She is such an amazing trooper today. I have really got to figure out something nice to do for her to show my appreciation.
Did I mention that all of this happened while I am seriously sleep deprived? I went to pick up my brother from the airport last night, but his flight was delayed, TWICE. By the time I picked him up and got back home, it was almost 1:00am. By the time that I settled in bed to go to sleep, it was after 1:30. I get up at 4:30 on days that we test. I was dead on my feet. Driving home this evening, I almost fell asleep several times. I took a long nap, got up and ate, checked my e-mails and LJ, and after I finish this, I am crawling into bed again. I am glad to have my dorkbutt brother home though. I've really missed him!
Okay, off to bed!
